NOTES ON THE DIALECT FORMS FOR THE ARTICLE, THE NOUN, THE PRONOUN AND THE
ADJECTIVE.
THE ARTICLE.
The article has in the dialects the form yr
before vowels and h, y in all
other cases. In most of the dialects yr
is used before consonantal i, but in some varieties of the Dimetian dialect y
is employed in that position, e.g., y iaith = the language.
|
|
|
(delwedd 2327) (tudalen 37)
|
(x37) After
vowels ’r is employed before both vowels
and consonants.
In rapid speech the y of yr is frequently lost, e.g. yn rardd, in
the garden.
NOTE.—The practice of differentiating in usage between yr and y has been one
of gradual evolution. In the Welsh of the glosses the form ir (= yr) was used before both
vowels and consonants. Hence the postvocalic ‘r before consonants is historically correct.
NOUNS.
NUMBER.
The colloquial like the literary language has two methods of expressing
number by means of —
(a) Singular forms
formed from the collective forms.
(b) Plural forms formed from the singular forms.
SINGULAR FORMS.
According as the dialect prefers u or
i, a or e, the suffixes
for the singular forms are —
-un or -in for the Masculine,
-an
or -en for the Feminine,
e.g., gwelltun or gwelltin, a blade of grass, from gwellt, grass,
melltan or mellten, a flash of lightning, from mellt, lightning.
PLURAL FORMS.
The plural forms differ considerably in different districts.
A list is subjoined of the plural forms of the Lleyn district of
Carnarvonshire, which may be employed as a basis of comparison.
The tendency of the colloquial language in all its dialects is towards the
increased used of suffixes to form the plural. According as the dialect
prefers -a or -e, -u or -i, -ion or -on, the plural endings are as follows:—
-a
or -e; e.g., tana, tane, fires.
-on
or -ion; e.g., gweison, gweision, men-servants.
|
|
|
(delwedd 2328) (tudalen 38)
|
(x38)
-oudd; e.g., moroudd, seas.
-iaid,-iad,-ied; e.g., Scotiaid (-iad), Scotied, Scotchmen.
-od; e.g., cathod, cats.
-udd, -idd; e.g., ffosudd, ffosidd, ditches.
-add, -edd; e.g., bysadd, bysedd, fingers.
-i; e.g., seiri, craftsmen.
-ad, -ed; e.g., pryfad, pryfed, worms.
-an, -en; e.g., ychan, ychen,
oxen.
When added to words of more than one syllable the ending -oudd tends to pass, especially in rapid
speech, into -odd; e.g., gwinllanodd,
vineyards.
In districts having a preference for ‘a’ in suffixes, individuals vary
greatly, owing to their habits of greater or less precision or the influence
of the literary language, in their tendency to reduce -iaid to -iad. Similarly and for similar reasons there is considerable variety in
the use of -oudd
and -odd.

ADJECTIVES.
COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE ENDINGS.
In all the dialects except the Dimetian the comparative and superlative
endings are ach
(comp.)
and a
(superl.),
e.g. byr, short; byrach, shorter; byra, shortest.
In the Dimetian dialect, which drops ‘dd’ out preserves ‘f’ in suffixes, the
endings are ach
(comp.)
and af
(superl.).
But there is a growing tendency, especially in the dialects of South Wales,
towards an analytical method of expressing the Comparative and the
superlative by the use of mu (mwi), more and mwua (mwiaf), most,e.g., mwi hēn, older; mwiaf hen, oldest,
Sometimes, as in Mediaeval Welsh, the comparative or superlative ending is
added to the feminine form, e.g., y ffordd fera, the shortest way.
THE COMPARATIVE OF EQUALITY.
The comparative of equality, or, as it is sometimes called the equal degree,
ends (according to the preference of the dialect for a or e) in -ad or -ed, e.g., trymad or trymed, as heavy.
As—as is expressed in the northern
dialects by means of cin (gin)—ag (a), cin being followed by
the comparative of equality, e.g., cin wynad (ed) a’r eira, as white as snow; or by mor—ag (a), mor
being
followed by the positive degree., e.g., mae o mor ysgafn a phluan / phluen , it is as light as a feather.
In these dialects mor is seldom used before monosyllabic and dissyllabic forms except in the
sense of so, e.g., mor dda, so good.
In the southern dialects mor is employed with the comparative of equality, e.g., mor ddied a’r fran, as black as the crow.
