pronounced in Gwentian. In this “regularised Gwentian spelling” its loss is not
indicated e.g. ewl instaed of ’ewl or (h)ewl.

distinguish it from i (preposition = to), i (tag pronoun = I, me), i
(possessive pronoun = his, her), and hyn > ’yn (this) to distinguish it from
yn (preposition = in) and yn (pre-verbnoun particle)

Gwentian: Opcyn, Hopcyn [ˈɔpkɪn, ˈhɔpkɪn] 2 surname: see
Hopkins.
*Hopkins (n) (surname) 1 Hopcyn [ˈhɔpkɪn] 2 áb Hopcyn
spelling pronunciation [ˈab ˈhɔpkɪn], historically
[a ˈpɔpkɪn] 3 Popcyn [ˈpɔpkɪn].
Hopkins is an English-type surname (= “Hopkin’s [son]) used in Wales to imitate
English naming paractices and replace the patronymic Hopcyn [ˈhɔpkɪn], a reduced
form of “àb Hopcyn ” (dropping of the element àb [ab] = son). e.g. a name such
as Morgan àb Hopcyn later became Morgan Hopcyn through the very common
occurrence in colloquial Welsh of the dropping of a pretonic syllable, as in
eisteddfod > steddfod [əiˈstɛðvɔd > ˈstɛðvɔd],
etc. If a surname was adopted from the earlier form àb Hopcyn it would have
retained the initial [p], hence Popcyn [ˈpɔpkɪn]. This surname is spelt Popkin in English. In
the 1800s there was a fashion of adding ‘s’ to forename-type surnames if they
did not already have it – e.g. Jone > Jones, William > Williams, Hugh
> Hughes, Hopkin > Hopkins. Also has been added unusually to Popkin,
hence Popkins.
Gwentian: Opcynz, Hopcynz [ˈɔpkɪnz, ˈhɔpkɪnz] (English
spelling: ’Opkins, Hopkins)
*hot (adj) poeth (adj), pl. poethion [pɔɪθ, ˈpɔɪθjɔn]
Gwentian: pōth (adj) pl. poethon [po:θ, ˈpɔɪθɔn]
