(06-08-2018) We have come across
a Twitter thread in Gwentian here: / Yr y^m wedi do o hyd i edefyn

The general rule for Welsh place-names is that they
should be written in standard Welsh, and not in the local form.
ç
There are vestiges of Gwentian in some standard forms
of names in south-east Wales. In others, the form used (or formerly used) in
English preserves features of Gwentian.
Aber-dâr
[abɛrˈda:r]
The name means the “confluence (of) (the) Dâr (stream) (and the river Cynon)”.
In Gwentian this is Aber-dɛ̄r [abɛrˈdǣr],
shortened to Ber-dɛ̄r or Bỳr-dɛ̄r [bərˈdǣr]. The
English name retains the [dǣr]
pronunciation: (Aberdare [abəˈdɛə])
Caer-dydd
The capital of Wales ought to be Caer-dyf [kaɪrˈdi:v]
in Welsh, and this locally would have been Car-dyf [karˈdi:v]. The
English form, Cardiff [ˈkardɪf], is reminiscent of the Gwentian form, though with a final [f] instead
of a final [v], with the shift of the accent to the first syllable and the
shortening of the final vowel [i:] < [ɪ].
The Welsh form reflects a local pronunciation with a change of final [v]
> [ð], which
occurs in a couple of other names in south-east Wales. But this change ios not
exclusively south-eastern and is also found in other parts of Wales.
The orgin of the name is (caer = Roman fort) + soft
mutation + (Tyf). From *tam-, the Brythonic form of the river name Taf [ta:v]. It seems that Tyf resulted from a genivitive form of *tam-
in Brythonic, which was preserved and the name was not
later re-formed, as might have been expected, to *Caer-daf.
According to modern spelling norms for Welsh place name “Caer-dydd”
is the spelling which ought to be used (a monosyllabic final element bearing
the accent should be preceded by a hyphen).
“Caerdydd” suggests that the accent is on the first
element. However, this is the official form of the city’s name.
