bôz yn point dâ to be well, to be in good health

This Traditional Cornish idiom is from Middle English ‘to be in good point’ (found 1200+), where ‘point’ meant ‘condition, state’.

The Middle English expression seems to be in turn a translation of Norman French.

“Etre en bon point” in French (to be in good condition, to be in good health) is noted in one French dictionary* to be frequent in the works of La Fontaine.

(Wikipedia 03-03-2022:

Jean de La Fontaine (UK: /ˌlæ fɒnˈtɛn, -ˈteɪn/, French: [ʒɑ̃ d(ə) la fɔ̃tɛn]; 8 July 1621 – 13 April 1695) was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, as well as in French regional languages.)

The phrase has given rise to a noun “embonpoint” (= plumpness). “Avoir de l’embonpoint” = to be a bit fat, “prender de l’embonpoint” = to get a little fat, develop a paunch.

The dictionary remarks that the spelling in French is irregular – either the “m” before the “p” should revert to “n”, or the “n” before the “b” should also be replaced by “m”. Thus either “en-bon-point ou embompoint”.

The word has been used in English since the 1600s, with its French pronunciation  /ɑ̃ bɔ̃ˈpwɛ̃ /, with the same meaning – (adj) plump, stout; (noun) tubbiness, excessive plumpness.
