written in the dialect of south-east Wales ("Y Wenhwyseg", literally ‘the
language of the people of Gwent’). Also texts on our website in Welsh and
English about this dialect. A century ago this was the majority dialect of
Wales; today it scarcely exists, as the population of the south-east was
induced to abandon the language in the first half of the 1900s and thus commit
‘linguistic suicide’.
