The use of Welsh forenames by some families from the mid-1820s onwards instead of English names was probably due in no small part to the publication of these two appeals to give children Welsh names.

From around 1825 onwards one begins to see in birth registers, censuses and parish records Welsh names of Celtic origin being used once more after centuries of abandonment. This was in no small part due to two items which appeared in Seren Gomer, 1823, under the title 'Enwau Cymreig' (Welsh Names). The authors were 'Cymro' (Welshman' and 'Ieuan Ddu o Lan Tawÿ' - 'black-haired Ieuan (John) from the bank of the Tawÿ (= Tawe) river'

SPELLING: In the text either the author or editor makes use of a grave accent in an unpredictable and inconsistent fashion.

We have marked the ‘y’ pronunced [i, i:] as ‘ÿ’. Unmarked ‘y’ is pronounced with the obscure vowel.

Mr. Gomer, - Gan fod y Cymrÿ yn ymhoffi cymaint yn eu hiaith a'u cenedl, pa beth all fod yr achos eu bod yn myned at ieithoedd ereill i ymofÿn am eu henwau priodol? O herwÿdd ambell waith iawn y cwrddwn ag enw Cymraeg yn ein plith, ond y mae enwau Seisnaeg yn lliosog iawn.
{ Mr. Gomer, as the Welsh people are so very fond of their language and nation, what can be the reason that they go to other languages to obtain their given names? Because it is very infrequently that we meet with a Welsh name amongst us, but English names are very numerous}

Anfynÿch y clywwn yr enw Gruffÿdd neu Owain; anamlach eto Llewelÿn. Y mae Madog a Charadog gwedi diflanu er ys oesoedd, ac nid wÿf yn cofio gweled mwÿ nag un Cadwgan yn fy amser. Ond y mae enwau y Seison yn nifeiriog, ac yn ennill tir beunÿdd; megÿs Robert, a Richard, a William, ac Edward, &c. Y mae yr Albaniaid yn ymhoffi cadw yn mlaen hen enwau eu hiaith, megÿs Donald, a Ronald, a Duncan, &c.; ac y mae gan y Gwÿddelod enwau priodol idd eu cenedl.
{ We rarely hear the name Gruffÿdd or Owain; and even rarer is Llewelÿn. Madog and Caradog disappeared ages back, and I don't remember seeing more than one Cadwgan in my time. But the names of English people are numerous, and gaining ground daily; such as Robert, and Richard, and William, and Edward, &c. The Scots are fond of keeping on the old names of their language, like Donald, and Ronald, and Duncan, &c.; and the Irish have the names which are appropriate to their nation }

Ac mor ufÿdd ydÿnt i'r drefn wael hon, a bod hÿn yn nod yr enwau ysgrythyrol yn cael eu gwneuthur yn Seisnaeg ganddÿnt; megÿs John, neu Shôn, a Siams, yn lle IOAN a IAGO, yn ôl anian y Gymraeg.
{ But the Welsh are happy to carry around marks of their subjugation by the English, in the names Jacky, and Dickey, aand Billy, &c. from generation to generation. And they're so obedient to this poor scheme of things, that even scriptural names are made English with them; like John, or Shôn, and Siams, instead of IOAN and IAGO, in keeping with the nature of the Welsh language. }

{It would be so easy to defend our nation from this disgrace through parents following the plan of Gwilÿm Owain and Iolo Morganwg, and looking for attractive names of their forefathers in their own language, and giving them to their children, instead of the present poor names; and the children will thank them for it, when they grow up.
