English-speakers have the advantage of the Gutenberg Project on the Internet - texts which are now in the public domain are put into electronic text form by volunteers and are then freely available to anyone, anywhere, any time. In general, public domain texts are (in the USA) any text before 1923, and in Europe any text seventy years after the death of its author. For example, in Wales the texts of the Welsh grammarian and scholar John Morris-Jones (1864-1929) are now in the public domain.

Who was Gutenberg? Johan Gutenberg [YO-han GUU-tøn-berk] was the name adopted by Johannes Gensfleisch (?1398-1468), a German printer who invented the system of movable type.

As far as we know, nobody has yet attempted any similar scheme in Welsh. So we've decided to do it ourselves, under the name of “Cywaith Siôn Prys Aberhonddu” - the 'Siôn Prys from Aberhonddu' Project

Who is Siôn Prys? 'John Price' was a native of Aberhonddu (called by the English 'Brecon') in south-east Wales. (Dates: 1502-55, died at the age of ±52-53),

Siôn Prys was a member of the Welsh upper class. Nowadays the descendants of such people are thoroughly anglicised and are completely divorced from the aspirations of the majority of the Welsh people. But this was before this section of Welsh society had abandoned its country and language and customs. Siôn Prys was a Welsh speaker like nearly all the Welsh people of the time. He attended Oxford University in England where he graduated in Law. During his lifetime he served the English state in its policy of extirpating Catholicism from within its boundaries, and he travelled from monastery to monastery to arrange their dismantling. He was able to profit from his position - he was granted the lease of the Priory in Aberhonddu, and he bought the priory of Saint Guthlac in the city of Hereford, where he made his home.

But apart from this, he was the person who printed the first book in Welsh. This is known as “Yn y lhyvyr hwnn” and it appeared in 1546 (when he was ±43-44), some three years after the passing of the second act in the English parliament annexing the territory of Wales to England. He had been interested in the history and literature of his homeland all his life, in spite of his years over the border.

And so we've used the name of this native of Aberhonddu for our scheme to put Welsh texts on the Internet some 450 years after the appearance of the first Welsh printed book.

The title of the book is in fact the first four words of the opening sentence (in modern Welsh, yn y llyfr hwn = in this book). It was aimed at the common people, mainly to acquaint them with the Christian faith. In it is the alphabet, a calendar, Y Credo (the Credo), Y Pader (the Lord's Prayer), y Deg Gorchymyn (the Ten Commandments), Saith Rhinwedd yr Eglwys (the Seven Virtues of the Church), and Saith Pechod Marwol (the Seven Deadly Sins). There are also observations on how to read Welsh, and advice for farmers on what tasks should be undertaken in what months.
