MR GOMER, - A mi yn lled segur un diwrnod, mi
dreuliais y prydnawn yn edrych dros amrywiol ysgrifau yn meddiant henwr yn y
gymdogaeth. O'r diwedd tarawais fy llaw ar ysgrif lled ddu ei lliw, ac o'r tu
allan iddi yr ysgrifeniad hyn, Buchedd Gitto Gelli Deg, yn yr wythnos gadw.
{ MR GOMER, - One day when I didn't have a lot to do (when
I was fairly idle) I spent the afternoon looking through various papers
which belonged to (in the ownership of) an old man in the neighbourhood.
By and by I came across (I hit my hand on) a document which was rather
grubby (fairly black its colour) and the outside this inscription, The
Life of Gitto of Gelli-deg in the "kept week"*. (The
first week in a job, with no payday because a worker is working a week in hand
and will not receive the first week's pay until the end of the second week)
(The word 'buchedd' (life) is usually associated with titles of the accounts
of the lives of the Celtic saints)}
Gan obeithio na fydd iddi, er düed ei lliw, i gymylu pelydr y SEREN, yr wyf yn
danfon atoch, fel byddo i chwi wybod pa fodd mae llawer glöwr, &c., yn
treulio rhan o'i amser; ac hefyd i ddangos gymaint y mae y Gymraeg wedi ei
llygru gan y werinos.
{ Hoping that, although it is so blackened (although
so black its colour) it won't take the shine off the 'Seren' (to cloud
the ray of sunshine of the Seren) (= 'Star of Gomer', the name of the
magazine founded in 1814 by Joseph Harris, whose by-name was 'Gomer'), so that
you may know how many miners, etc, spend part of their time; and also to show
how much the Welsh language has been debased by the ordinary people}

"DYDD LLUN. Cwni am wyth - galw ar Dai Sion - geneu'r pwll
erbyn deg - wrth y pwll cwrdd â Dic y Gwrychyn, Twm Pen yr Hewl, Lewsin Lawen,
Wil mab Sianco, Sioni Gardi, hen Rys y Labrwr, Twm Garw, &c. -
danfon am fetching o'r Globe, gwerth 7s. 6d. - yfed hòno mewn awr
- danfon am un arall o'r Wellington, gwerth 10s. 6d.
"MONDAY. Get up at eight - call on Dai Sion - at the mouth of the
pit by ten o' clock - by the pit meet Dic y Gwrychyn (Dick of the house / farm
called 'the hedge'), Twm Pen yr Hewl (Tom of the house / farm called 'road end'),
Lewsin Lawen (merry Lewis), Wil mab Sianco (Will son of Jenkin), Sioni Gardi
(Johnnie from Cardiganshire, or from the country), old Rhys the labourer, Twm
Garw (rough Tom), etc. - send for a 'fetching' (beer to be brought out from a
public house) from the Globe, worth 7 shillings and 6 pence - drink it
in an hour - send for another one from the Wellington, worth 10
shillings and 6 pence.}
- Sioni Cardi yn gweud y llanwai ddramaid o lo yn well na fi - ei
daro lawr yn gwmws - ymladd - Sioni wedi colli doi ddant, cael doi
lygad di, a thori asgwrn y ei ên - mynd lawr i'r Duke - yfed

better than me - knock him down flat (exactly) - fight - Sioni loses two
teeth, gets two black eyes, and breaks his jawbone - go down to the Duke
- drink a crown's (five shillings') worth - the wife comes to look for me - go
home with her at half past twelve - dead drunk - go to bed in my working
clothes (in the coal clothes).}
"DYDD MAWRTH. Geneu'r pwll am naw - mynd i mewn gyda'r drams -
cwrdd a'r gweithwyr wrth y Parting mawr - cyduno i fynd i maes am
fod yr air yn ddrwg - mynd i gyd i'r Royal Oak - porter
ffamws o London - Wil mab Sianco a Twm Pen yr Hewl yn ymladd -

trams in - meet the workers by the Big Parting - agree to go out because
the air is bad - we all go to the Royal Oak - great porter from London -

- Wil yn enill y dydd - Rhys o'r Wenallt yn dweud wrthoi fy mod wedi
cael fy nhori maes o'r clwb neithiwr o eisieu bod yno yn talu y pumed
clwb - dyna hi yn neat! - yn aelod chwech mlynedd ond un mis - dwy bunt
yn dod i fi y mis nesa - ffarwel lili!
{- Will wins (wins the day) - Rhys o'r
Wenallt (Rhys from Wenallt farm) tells me I was excluded from the club (cut
out of the club) last night for not being there to pay the fifth instalment
- that's nice, isn't it? - a member for six years less one month - two
months coming to me next month - farewell lily! (meaning??)}
"DYDD MERCHER. Pwll rhwng saith ag wyth - y gob wedi
cwympo i'r hewl - ei chodi i fynu - trwbl ofnadwy - glanhau y
talcen oddiar dydd {sic}
Sadwrn - y gloden yn swno yn lled drwm - gorfod mynd maes i mofyn
pren - dechreu cwto - presen ofnadwy yn y cwt - tori
blaen y mandrel - dim calon i weithio - mynd tua thre erbyn tri -
y wraif a'r plant eu gyd yn llefain - Dic y Baili wedi dod a thiced
Cwrt y Conshans am gwrw er ys pum mlynedd -
{"WEDNESDAY. Pit between seven and eight - the
gob (waste heap) has fallen into the roadway - clear it up (lift it
up) - terrible trouble - clean up the coalface from Saturday - the
"cloden" (layer of clay between coal strata, or a stone in the roof)
sounds fairly heavy - have to go out to fetch a prop - begin to cut (the coal)
- terrible iron pyrites in the cut - break the tip of the pick -
no inclination (heart) to work - go home around three - the wife and the
children are all crying - Dic the bailiff has brought a writ from the 'Court of
Conscience' (debtors' court) for beer for the last five years}

is seven pounds - the wife crying clasps me in an embrace (falls on my throat /
neck) and says, 'Oh! Gitto! Gitto! why are you deceiving me like this?" -
her look and her tenderness almost break my heart - in the evening so full of
grief that I thought two pints of beer would do me good }

talcen - gwaith ofnadwy i chliro hi - coesau'r tools i gyd wedi
tori, ond y pickish - mynd i'r yard i fofyn coesau - naddu
trwyr dydd - hen Rhees y Labrwr yn dod heibio'r ty

stone in the roof has fallen at the coalface - terrible job to clear it - the
handles of the tools have all broken, except for the pickaxe - go to the
yard to fetch handles - whittling all day - old Rhees y Labrwr comes by
the house and calls on me }

- clasgi dramed ar y ffordd - mynd tua thre - y wraig wedi

tramsful of coal - collect a tramful on the way - go home- the wife has made
some great shortcake - thought of going down to the Ship tonight -, but afraid
of seeing something in the night - go to bed early.}
"DYDD SADWRN. Yn y gwaith am ddau o'r gloch boreu heddy - gweithio
mewn slip fawr -
- cael gwaith cael dwy ddramed - maes am naw - mynd i'r office
cyn unarddeg - Dai Sion yn derbyn yr arian -

- work in a big slip (?place where there is a geological fault) - it's a
hard job to (have work to) get two tramsful - out at nine - go to
the office before eleven - Dai Sion receives the money -}

- y wraig yn dod i lawr - rhoi glassed o rwm iddi, a thicyn o
lewmn ynddo, dyma fel y mae hi yn ei liko - gofyn am arian i dalu'r siop
- rhoi tair punt iddi - cywilydd i fynd gydai, am nad oedd digon o
arian i gliro'r llyfr - hithau ac ofan fynd i'r siop, rhag cael
ei chymenu am ddod a rhy fach o arian

Greyhound) - only four pounds coming to me - the wife comes down - giver
her a glass of rum, with a bit of lemon in it, that's how she likes it - gofyn
for money to pay the shop - give her three pounds - ashamed to go with her (shame
[on me] going with her), since there wasn't enough money to clear the book

case she gets rebuked for bringing too little money}

- yn meddwi ar chwech cwpaned - y wraig yn dod yn nol -
{I keep a pound to pay the credit for last month's
beer, and to have ten shillings for this month's beer - a pity I'm deceiving
Gwenny like this - but what collier can live without beer? - little Gitto stays
with me until his mother comes back - little Gitto likes beer - gets drunk on
six cupsful - the wife comes back - }
ofyn ifi ddod tua thre - yfi yn pallu, achos fod y shwg
y llawn - dw i byth yn madel pan bo'r cwart yn llawn - y cyfri
yn dod mewn - gwr y ty wedi dodi lawr shwg yn ormodd - ar ol

{ asks me to come home - I refuse, because the jug is
full - I never leave when there's a full quart jug (when the quart is full)
- the bill comes (the account comes in) - the landlord has written down
an extra jug (has put down a jug too much) - after lots of heated words
(cross words), I hit the landlord, and start to strip to the waist (and
start to strip)- two constables come - take me to the lock-up (the
dark house) - I won't say any more because of the shame I feel (for
the shame)"}
